Everyday Traditions

Turning normal routines into loads of fun!

When is a routine more than just a routine? When it's done with your best friend! Ever notice that typical everyday tasks are more fun and enjoyable when your dog is with you? Maybe it's because he's happy to be around you, or maybe it's because you both know you are about to share a good time together. That's when a habit becomes a fun tradition!

For Norman, Okla., resident Tara White and her four-year old Beagle, Eleanor Rigby (Ellie for short), their traditions start early in the morning. "Ellie gets up a little after I do each morning," White states. "She comes into the bathroom wagging her tail and stares at me until I bend down and say 'good morning.' Then it's time to go outside. If it's warm, she spends time sniffing. If it's cold, she's back in just a few seconds. She comes back into the bathroom where I have a treat waiting for her. Sometimes she is even one step ahead of me in our routine!" White can tell that Ellie's favorite part of this morning ritual is coming back inside because "there is an extra spring in her step."

But this routine-loving duo has a favorite habit: their Monday walk! "We go on a long walk together when I get home from work," White says. "[These] walks have become an important part of my week as well as hers. The excitement she shows when I come home from work or when I ask her if she wants to go on a walk is priceless. It's the best feeling in the world and makes spending time with her fun. Without fail, the first part of her walk she runs as far as the leash will let her and then looks back at me with her tail wagging and tongue hanging out as if she's saying, 'Come on!' I'll walk for that any day."

Walks are a big part of the routine for Colorado Springs, Co., newbies Wendy Joseph and her Boxer, Brinkley. This pair just loves spending time together, whether it's laughing together every morning over a cup of coffee or taking weekly trips to explore their new surroundings. "Usually sometime in the late morning or early afternoon Brinkley takes me for a walk. She is usually so excited that she pulls me around the neighborhood," Joseph says. "Having a best friend like Brinkley has changed my life. She gets me out of the house and walking."

Brinkley has created her own traditions with Joseph as well. Since these friends are in tune with each other, Brinkley knows how to cheer up Joseph as they adjust to their new location. "She is a great dog and seems to sense when I need something," Joseph says. "Having her lay her head in my lap or curl up beside me can really relieve all my stress. I'm so glad she is a part of my life!"

Traditions can be a way to add stability to a crazy schedule, but most importantly, they are a great way to have fun with your dog. The best part is knowing that your dog enjoys them just as much as you do! "I know our routines and traditions are special to her by the excitement that she shows when she gets to do them," White says. "I know that she will always be happy and always be excited about doing something with me."

What normal routine makes you and your dog's day fun?
