Can your dog wave?
By Lisa Martin
Terry Cagle can’t help but feel downright delighted when his eight-year-old Shih Tzu greets him at the door with a wave. “It’s just the best feeling in the world to see Sadie wave to me,” says this Arlington, Texas, resident. “Talk about a warm welcome home!”
This fun moment between friends got started with a few belly rubs and a treat or two. Want to do the wave too? It’s easy!
Kneeling next to Sadie, Cagle would hold a treat in his hand and say “wave” (a friendly “hello” would work well too). After pausing, Sadie would nudge his hand. Cagle would repeat saying “wave” followed by his own wave. Sadie quickly starting picking up a paw.
What followed next? A celebration! At home, once your dog reaches the point where he or she touches your hand with a paw, it’s your turn to move. You can stand up now, and, over time, your pal will eventually wave back when you do.
Now how’s that for a fine hello!

My little Bichon, Ari, is so happy to see me at the end of my work day. She always greets me at the door, tail wagging, jumps up to be held and just a little squeaky
talk to say, "I missed you today."

Both of my Black Lab mix rescues greet me--after 10 minutes or 10 hours gone--with squeaks and snorts and always a toy in their mouths (whichever toy is closest). Sloppy, soggy, full of LOVE!
