10 Fun Facts about Dogs
By Trey Garrison
1. Your dog’s nose has about 220 million scent-sensitive cells, compared to just 10 million scent cells for you! The breed with the most scent cells? Bloodhounds, of course, with 300 million. During a walk together, let him sniff aroundeven if it’s something earthy. He’s enjoying what for you would be a picturesque sunset. Let him savor the bouquet of whatever it is he’s interested in. Every new smell for him is like seeing the Grand Canyon so stop and enjoy!
2. Your dog knows you first by smell. Don’t worryhis nose is sensitive enough that no matter if you are all showered and perfumed, or just back from the gym, he smells the real you every time.
3. Do you know what your dog enjoys most about his food? The taste and aroma! While his nose is 20 times more sensitive than yours, flavor is important to your dog.
4. Your dog’s hearing is five times better than yours. Dogs hear up to 50,000 to 65,000 cycles per second – humans, just 20,000. You want to know why he perks up long before you hear someone walking up to the door? There you have it!
5. Like you, dogs sweat. They cool off by panting, but they do have sweat glands on the pads of their feet.
6. Dogs laugh! To the human ear, it sounds like an ordinary pant, but animal behavior experts have proven that dogs actually laugh!
7. Your dog’s peripheral vision is between 180 and 270 degrees, depending on the shape of his face and the length of his nose. Visual capabilities vary by breed, but their ability to detect size, small and rapid movements and see in low levels of light make them successful hunters.
8. You know how you view your companion as a best friend? He views you the same way. Behaviorists have it down firm: he’s as linked to you as you are to him. When he has someone on his home turf whose companionship he enjoys, he sees you as part of the pack. In fact, if your bond is strong, his allegiance to you is more powerful than that to his species. Dogs feel the same need for togetherness that you do, and they offer their loyalty unconditionally.
9. His whiskers are the ultimate radar system! While whiskers may look cute, they serve a valuable function! Whiskers are very sensitive hairs that can sense the slightest change in air flow and pressure and assist in navigating in low-light and small-space situations. It’s a holdover from his ancestors’ days when wind carried the scent of predator, prey or other pack members.
10. He wants to learn new things with you. With few exceptions, most sports or activities are perfect for the ultimate team, you and your best friend! Beyond the obvious such as Frisbee® hiking, hunting and swimming, dogs also enjoy touch football, soccer and even yoga! The simple trick? Patience and a reward! He has an active mind; treat him as you would any newcomer to a hobby, and in no time you will both be making memories.
