Puppy's Life

Splish, Splash

Soak up a good time while bathing your puppy

When Thiesen Moose, a Weimaraner/Great Dane mix, was just eight weeks old, his owner, Scott Stapert, created a fun bathing routine by getting “Mr. Moose” used to a quick shower. As his puppy grows, the event involves the pair enjoying the Florida sunshine and a dash into a towel as the grand finale.

“We almost always do baths on Saturday afternoons outside. Since we live in Southern Florida, it is always a warm and sunny day,” says Stapert of Fort Lauderdale, Fla. “I start preparing ‘Mr. Moose’ in the morning by asking him if he wants a massage. I continue to ask until we are ready to begin.”

Thiesen really enjoys this time. The fun part of getting clean is the massage Stapert gives him with his bath.

“I tell him he’s a good puppy and how great he will look. Once he’s rinsed off, the real fun begins. He dashes about the backyard, galloping around with a huge smile on his face. He especially enjoys having his face dried.”

Bath time always ends with a puppy treat.

“I believe he does enjoy the attention and the treats for sure,” Stapert says. “It is such a ritual now that he knows what to expect.”

Warming Up

Bathing can be a playful experience for you and your puppy too! It’s a new adventure, and there’s sure to be some splashes and a lot of smiles along the way. A few easy suggestions make it fun and safe.

  • Suds up safely. Gather everything you’ll need (towels, brushes, treats) in advance so you’re able to reassure your pal and stay at his side at all times. Puppies can have sensitive skin, so use a shampoo specifically for puppies.
  • Sing along! Your puppy loves to hear your voice, so continue your conversation and even sing…he might even join in.
  • Splish, splash, success. Reward your pup with plenty of praise!

I have an all-white Akita Inu female pup and an all-white cut-eared Dogo Argentino and I thought they didn't really need all of this warming up--but it works, so try it!
