If you’re searching for a new way to pal around with your puppy, look no further than a favored childhood pastime—the scavenger hunt. The joy of discovery you enjoyed as a youngster can be easily translated into a spontaneous escapade for two.

Ready for a search party? When his pooch Diesel was a puppy, Robyn Burkes, of Denver, Colorado, enjoyed planting his favorite toys in a park and watching his tail wag and his head bob as he hunted for the hidden dog treats. Whether your puppy prefers inside, outside, or both, find a fun space he can nose around in where you can help him forage for the goodies you’ve hidden.

Round up the players. Puppy’s favorite playthings—chew toys, plush dolls, balls, a Frisbee®, teethers—are ideal for hiding. Burkes stashes dog treats, balls, and a Frisbee for Diesel. When your puppy finds your thoughtfully placed items, it will be like he’s discovering them for the first time. For variety, your pal may also enjoy a bowl of water in case he gets thirsty during his quest.

Celebrate! Now the fun really begins as you and your friend explore the scavenger hunt area. You’ll marvel at how he uses his senses—sight, touch, taste, smell—to uncover his favorite things. Didn’t quite find everything? That’s OK.
