Moving With Your Dog

by Kellyn Curtis

Moving with your dog is a great opportunity to spend some quality time with your best friend, whether you’re embarking on a cross-country trek or a short hike across town. That’s exactly what Destin, Florida, resident Sherry Londe and her Schnoodle, Buttons, did when they moved from St. Louis, Missouri, to the Florida coast.

The pair had a great time during the 12-hour drive from Missouri to Florida. In fact, driving is something they enjoy doing together all the time! No matter where Londe goes, Buttons is buckled up right next to her. “Buttons loves to be in the car,” Sherry says.

The only thing different about this car ride was its length. “It’s a long trip, and we’ve never driven that far together before,” she says. Buttons didn’t seem to mind the long drive. After all, they were doing what they love doing most!

Checklist for moving with your dog
There are plenty of ways to make the big day an exciting adventure for you and your pooch!

  • Map out dog parks or dog-friendly restaurants where you can stop along the way.
  • Make sure to stop every two to three hours for a play (and potty) break.
  • Keep toys in the car so your best friend stays entertained.
  • Make sure your pal is buckled up — safety first!

Creating a dog-friendly home
If it’s possible, place your dog’s bed and favorite toys in the new house before you arrive. That way, he will see and smell things he recognizes!

When you get there, help your dog get settled by showing him around the house and taking him on walks through the new neighborhood. “You want to make sure they get into a routine as quickly as possible,” Sherry says.

After a while, your pal will feel right at home. “Buttons has adjusted really well,” she says. “She just needed to get used to the new neighborhood.”
