Staying at Dog-Friendly Hotels

by Kristy Alpert

Staying at a hotel with your dog is a great excuse for an all-night adventure! More hotels across the nation are welcoming two and four-legged friends to their rooms; and some are making the stay even more exciting...with dog amenities!

Rogers, Arkansas, resident Heather Davis made the most out of a recent trip to an Estes Park, Colorado, hotel with her 8-year-old Terrier mix Scruffy, and she came prepared.

“I always bring water and food and a bed for the ride in the car, and his leash,” Heather says. “He always has to sniff it out and make sure it’s all ok when we go to new places. This usually involves a thorough sniff-out along the baseboards and under beds, then he’ll stop and give a loud snort, exhale, or sigh through his nose before jumping on the bed and settling down.” (Staying inside? Visiting a Hotel With Your Dog
Although many dog-friendly hotels are now offering personalized water bowls, toys, dog treats, and cushy beds, it may be a good idea to bring a few items that your dog will recognize in this new environment like:

  • His favorite toy
  • A blanket or towel that smells like home
  • His dog food (switching his food on vacation could lead to an upset tummy.)

Boutique Hotels for Dogs
Although economy hotels have welcomed dogs for years, now boutique and even vintage hotels are gladly turning keys over to guests and their furry friends. The bohemian-chic Ace Hotel in Portland, Oregon, is happy to allow any size dog in their vintage-modern rooms (79 rooms are equipped with claw-foot tubs, large beds, and record players with a choice of vintage vinyl). Doggie duos can preserve the memory of a stay here with a trip to the black-and-white analog photo booth in the lobby.

It was the endless possibility of traveling with her dog that made it so special for Heather and her pal Scruffy. “Staying at a hotel with Scruffy means I can take him with me when I go on vacation!” Heather says. “I love that I don’t have to worry about boarding him or finding a pet-sitter, and he’s happier being with me anyway.”

Dog Hotel Amenities
As more and more hotels welcome dogs, the doggie offerings have also gone from basic to adventurous! From puppy pagers to entire packages designed to give you and your dog the perfect surfing experience, hotels are doing everything they can to keep best friends together even on the road. Guests staying at the Cambria Shores Inn in Cambria, California, can take advantage of a welcome basket that includes dog towels, food and water bowls, placemats, dog waste bags, a current copy of a local dog magazine, a flashlight, and a listing for some trusted in-suite dog sitters. The inn also offers dog strollers for old souls with tired soles and heated dog beds for those chilly California nights.
