Chicago, IL: Dog Friendly Places

by Rachel Mosteller

As the third-largest city in the nation, Chicago, Illinois, offers a wide variety of dog-friendly attractions. From restaurants to boat rides, the sky’s the limit for finding enjoyable activities to do with your best friend. In the heart of the city, fun with your dog is just a hop, skip, or carriage ride away.

Chicago Dog Beaches and Attractions
Chicago’s famed beaches aren’t just for people. Those with two and four legs can hit up Montrose Dog Beach for an afternoon in the surf. This beach is free but does require a $5 DFA tag. Though the beach is open until 9 p.m., mornings are most popular.

Take your pet to the Lakefront Trail, which offers 10 miles of lake views.

If you and your dog love to play fetch, see if he can contain his excitement at the Chicago White Sox Dog Days! You’ll get to sit in the left field bleachers and enjoy the game together…but don’t delay! These games sell out early.

Can’t make it to Wrigley Field to see the Cubs? Try out Wiggly Field to see the pups! This dog park features a dog run, water station, and other dog-friendly activities.

If your pooch loves riding in the car, you will both have fun riding in a horse-drawn carriage pulled by The Antique Coach Company, where you can both enjoy the sights at a leisurely pace. Choose from a variety of destinations, including Lincoln Park, the lakefront, and the Magnificent Mile.

Chicago has an assortment of venues to visit with your dog, even if they aren’t designated only for four-legged friends. Call ahead to find out if an establishment will welcome your dog. Most require a leash and proof of vaccination.

Dog-friendly Restaurants in Chicago
Start your day trip off right with a stroll to Pauline’s for breakfast. Choose from the extensive diner-style menu (banana pancakes are a popular choice) on the cozy white picket-fenced patio in warmer months. As your buddy laps up a bowl of water, sip the house-blend coffee.

All that people — and pup — watching got you thirsty? Take a breather on Uncommon Ground’s patio, weather permitting, while you enjoy fresh pastries and he nibbles on dog biscuits and enjoys the house water.
