Indianapolis, IN: Dog Friendly Places
by Kristy Alpert
Voted one of America's most walkable cities by Sports Illustrated, Indianapolis, Indiana, ensures you don't have to be a Hoosier (or a Hoosier dog) to enjoy exploring on foot—or paws! Although this metropolis is known for speed with the famous Indianapolis Motor Speedway at the heart of the city, it also boasts an astounding 207 park properties around town. Here are a few great places that welcome both you and your pal:
Aesop's Tables
Nestled in the heart of the Massachusetts Ave. cultural district is this
fido-friendly Mediterranean café. Along with delicious dishes from
Spain, Portugal, Italy, Greece, Morocco, Turkey, and more, this
restaurant also welcomes dogs on its European-style patio.
Broad Ripple Farmers Market
Market-friendly dogs are welcome to this Wednesday evening and Saturday
morning gathering of local farmers and artisans. The Broad Ripple
Farmers Market is part of the newly formed farmers market consortium in
Indianapolis, and strives to provide the freshest locally grown seasonal
produce. With a couple of dog-specific booths thrown in the mix, this
is a great place to taste the local flavor with your pal; short leashes
recommended.
Fountain Square
While there are many great places to walk around and hang out with your
dog downtown, just southeast of downtown is a quirky and quaint square,
perfect for soaking in some real Indianapolis culture. Fountain Square
is packed full of vintage and antique shops, cafés and restaurants with
outdoor seating for you and your dog, and a vibrant arts scene with
dog-friendly concerts in the garden.
Broad Ripple Bark Park
Located just across the street from the Wednesday Broad Ripple Farmers
Market, this off-leash dog park is a great spot to run around freely on
those city paws. A Pooch Pass is required to enter, and can be obtained
from the park office with a copy of your dog's shot records, a signed
waiver and application, and a fee.
Mutt Strut 2012
The 9th annual Mutt Strut will be held on Saturday, April 28,2012, rain
or shine. This event allows you and your buddy to walk the 2.5 miles
around the famous Indianapolis Motor Speedway, along with a fun-filled
day of events: live music, canine massages, and the Indy Dog and Disc
Club performing on the track. At the end of the day, the Top Dog will be
awarded the prize of ambassador of the Mutt Strut 2013. All donations
will support the Humane Society of Indianapolis.
