The Ozarks: Dog Friendly Places
by Eric Butterman
Lush forests, scenic mountains, clear rivers, lakes, and springs welcome you and your dog to the Ozarks, the ultimate outdoor adventure. Packed with charming towns and diverse geography, this broad expanse extends through parts of Missouri, Arkansas, Kansas, and even Oklahoma.
Ready to reach for the rocks or climb new heights of friendship? Here are a few dog-friendly destinations to discover together:
Ha Ha Tonka State Park
Leashed dogs can roam over 6.5 miles of paved trails, as well as the eponymous spring, which flows with 50 million gallons of water a day. With trails ranging from 1/5 of a mile to 7 miles, you and your dog will have a chance to wander amongst more than 300 recognized plants. Don't forget to check out the ruins of Robert Snyder's mansion, its remnants giving a peek into one of the most famous houses built in the area. The site also allows for some of the best views of the park. The 1,000-acre woodland natural area allows you to take in nature as it was meant to be discovered.
Thunder Mountain Park
Long a place of Native American legend, the park reveals the waters of Mystery Lake and claims to have more onyx formations than any other cave or cavern. It's also very boat friendly, so you can rent one for the day and enjoy the water with your companion. You might spot red foxes and deer along the half-mile walking path, and the cave area allows dogs that can be carried.
Eureka Springs Historic District
Arrive at Eureka Springs, Arkansas, and you're immediately struck by the Victorian architecture of its historic district. Spend the afternoon strolling with your dog past an array of shops, enjoying the tremendous view of the East Mountain Overlook, and listening to street musicians who will be sure to have you both dancing.
Kirkwood Lodge
Love the water? Take the plunge with an old-fashioned lake vacation in the heart of the Ozarks. In operation for more than 70 years, Kirkwood Lodge has pet-friendly rooms, outdoor games, and relaxing scenery, not to mention fantastic swimming for you and your dog in the Lake of the Ozarks.
