Alabama: Dog Friendly Places

by Eric Butterman

"Sweet Home Alabama" is not only a rock song; it's how the natives want you to feel about the Yellowhammer State. From friendly beaches to open country spaces, here are some ways you and your best friend can take in 'Bama's Southern hospitality.

Ruffner Mountain Nature Center

You can both revel in the fresh scents and riot of color of the wildflowers that blanket your path in this Red Mountain Ridge mainstay. The wetland trail is a visual highlight, and because the trails are divided into different lengths, your dog can enjoy any trail at the center regardless of size and stamina.

DeSoto State Park

Waterfalls are one of this park's top attractions, but there are also more than 20 miles of trails to explore with your buddy. Or pack a picnic and bring a bowl and simply take in the nature around you. When you want to cool off, dip your feet and paws in the still waters of Little River.

The Beaches of Dauphin Island

Enjoy the feel of white sand between your toes while listening to the lilting surf of the Gulf waters. With the exception of West End beach, you and your friend are welcomed everywhere—so make sure to enjoy the dunes!

Sheraton Birmingham

Your dog will receive his own special pillow and bowl upon check-in, along with the occasional surprise treat. The nearby entertainment district provides plenty of fun and convenient places within walking distance.

Cantina

Though your dog can't partake of the fish burger, Churrasco steak, or chocolate chip bread pudding, he can stretch out on the patio while you nosh at this unique taqueria in downtown Birmingham.
