Tennessee: Dog Friendly Places
by Paula Felps
Tennessee is known for many things, and exploring this great state with your dog is an adventure that is bound to create some great memories. Start off in Memphis–the state's biggest city and home of Elvis Presley's Graceland mansion. You can then start on a road trip that combines music, history, and a whole lot of fun.
Memphis
There are many ways to see the city, including carriage tours that will welcome you and your dog. Or you can discover it on your own by foot, and seek out some of the many dog-friendly stores within the city, such as Burke's Bookstore. Leave time for a sandwich at Muddy's Bake Shop, where leashed pets are allowed at the sidewalk tables, and then, when you're ready to burn off that meal, head to the east side of the city. Spend a few hours in the beautiful Meeman-Shelby Forest State Park, where you can enjoy some great walks on the trails. Finally, call it a night and rest your head at The Westin Memphis Beale Street, where dogs under 40 pounds are welcome. Although dogs can't visit the King's estate, it's definitely something you'll want to drive by or walk past–and get a photo of you both at the famous Graceland gates!
Shiloh National Military Park
The quickest way to get to Nashville is by Interstate 40, but if you want to add a little history to your visit, take US-64 East to the Natchez Trace Parkway North. That will lead you to Shiloh, one of this country's most famous Civil War battlefields. You can opt for the driving tour through this park, which is open every day except Christmas, or you can get out and walk around the grounds with your dog to relive American history.
Nashville
Music City is your next stop, and it has more than enough to wear you both out! Dog-friendly shops, restaurants, and dog parks make this city a wonderful playground for both of you. Treat yourself to a wonderful night at the Loews Vanderbilt Hotel, where your room will include a placemat, bowls, and treats for your furry companion–and even a bed if you need it–as part of its "Loews Loves Pets" program.
