Austin, TX: Dog Friendly Places

by Kristy Alpert

When it comes to dog-friendly cities, few compare to Austin, the capital of Texas. Whether your idea of a fun-filled vacation involves shopping, dining, romping — or just soaking up some sun — Austin is a great getaway that you and your dog can enjoy together.

With more than a dozen off-leash dog parks and plenty of dog-friendly shops and restaurants, there’s no shortage of fur-friendly places to explore. While the city bills itself as the “Live Music Capital of the World,” dog lovers have discovered that it could just as easily call itself the Canine Friendly Capital of the World.

So whatever it is you like to do with your dog, chances are you can find a place to do it in Austin. Here are a few places to start:

Austin Java Company
Jump-start your day with a big cup of coffee while your best friend enjoys a complimentary bowl of water at the Austin Java Company. You can enjoy great people- and dog-watching opportunities or make new friends as you sip your morning beverage, and the two of you will be welcomed on the front patio of this Austin staple.

Lofty Dog
After you’ve gotten fueled up for the day, burn off some energy by visiting Lofty Dog, a spectacular shop for you and your dog. Whether you’re looking for some new outdoor gear, dog accessories, or new bowls, this store has it all — and it’s all in style. Stop in and see why this fabulous store was named “Retailer of the Year” by Pet Products News International!

Dogadillo
If you’re in the mood for even more shopping, you can’t miss Dogadillo, a fantastic boutique where you’ll find high-end clothing and accessories. For the well-dressed dog or the party pup looking for something new to make an impression at the dog park, this store is a must-visit!

Austin City Tours
One of the best ways to get to know Austin is, of course, to walk around the city. And there’s no better way to do that than to try the guided walking tours. Free to you and your pooch, these strolls begin on the steps of the Capitol. (Just be sure that he’s on a leash.) The tours are offered year-round, except on major holidays. Choose from two different tours — the 10-block Congress Avenue and Sixth Street area, or the Bremond Block Historic District.

Auditorium Shores Park
The city’s extensive park system offers many great areas for getting out and playing with your pooch. Auditorium Shores (formerly Town Lake Park) is great for swimming, hiking, or just relaxing together. The park provides 10 miles of trails, and the beaches alongside the lake welcome people as well as their pooches looking for some playtime.
